In the Wortham softball team’s first trip to the postseason after a oneyear hiatus, the Lady Bulldogs ran into a tough Riesel team.
After all, the Lady Indians were ranked No. 2 in the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s Class 2A state poll. Riesel lived up to its billing with a two-game sweep of Wortham in a Class 2A bi-district best-of-three playoff series.
The Lady Indians won the opener, 12-0, last Thursday in Wortham, and finished the sweep with a 17-2 rout on Friday in Riesel. Friday’s game ended after three innings because of the 15run rule.
In the series opener, Riesel took advantage of four hits and two errors to take a 4-0 lead. The score remained the same until the top of the fourth when the Lady Indians used two hits and an error to plate two more runs and increase their lead to 6-0.
Two more hits and two more errors led to two more runs for Riesel in the fifth, and the Lady Indians scored four more in the sixth off of four hits and two errors. Wortham managed to record three hits - two from Madison Newhouse and one from Dakota Butler.
In Friday’s series-clincher, the Lady Bulldogs managed to score twice off of a pair of solo home runs from Haylee Shivers and Megan Cryer. But Riesel hit six homers with three of them being of the three-run variety, two were two-run, and the sixth was a solo shot.
The Lady Indians led 3-0 after one inning of play before Shivers hit her solo blast in the top of the second. Riesel added another three runs in the bottom of the second to increase its lead to 6-1.
Cryer hit her solo homer in the top of the third to make it 6-2. But the Lady Indians scored 11 runs in the bottom of the frame, including seven with two outs, to put the game - and the series - away.
In addition to the solo homers from Cryer and Shivers, Butler also had a hit in the contest. Wortham finished its season 11-16.
