In 1918, just before the American Doughboys began to arrive in force in France in WWI, the German High Command made the decision for an all-out attack to win the war.
As the doughboys raced through Paris to get to the Marne River in time to prevent disaster, American Commander, John J. Pershing, stopped at the tomb of the Marquis de Lafayette said “we have come to pay our debt.” Almost 150 years before, Lafayette had brought the aid from France that enabled the American Colonies to win the Revolutionary War.
