Weather hinders Wortham City Hall repairs

The renovation of Wortham City Hall was expected to take at least six months, but it could be longer due to the heavy rain the area has received. “(The rain) seems to be coming out of nowhere some days,” City Secretary Kasi Wright said.

The renovation of Wortham City Hall was expected to take at least six months, but it could be longer due to the heavy rain the area has received.

“(The rain) seems to be coming out of nowhere some days,” City Secretary Kasi Wright said. “I wish we could save some of it for the summer when we will be needing it.”

The repairs to the city building started off with a new roof, but the construction workers discovered more damage to the building that needed to be fixed. Wortham City Council has authorized all the exterior and interior repairs to be done.

In the meantime, city employees are in temporary quarters across the street. “We will all be grateful when the work is finished,” Wright said. In the City Council’s Tuesday, June 11, meeting Councilman Michael Busby was appointed mayor pro tem for the next year.

In other action, the council:

• Approved the setup downtown of booths and activities for the July 4th parade and authorized fireworks for the Blues Festival in September.

• Approved changing the Texas Municipal Retirement System program from a 25-year to a 20--year service plan in the next fiscal year.

• Approved renewal of the employee insurance coverage with the Texas Municipal League in the next fiscal year but authorized research of premium rates, deductibles and benefits with other plans to determine if there might be a better choice.
