When it comes to finding game officials for high school varsity sporting events in the Bi-Stone Area, it can be a challenging task.
The TexasAssociation of Sports Officials, or TASO, is the largest officiating group within the state that is recognized by the University Interscholastic League and Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools. Most high school varsity games and meets in Texas are sanctioned by one of these two organizations.
According to Bill Theodore, the assistant executive director of TASO, he estimated there are more than 12,000 officials registered by TASO who are qualified to officiate various UIL or TAPPS varsity events. Only a few thousand of those officials are qualified to officiate in multiple sports. Theodore said there had been a decline in officiating numbers since the COVID-19 pandemic, but those numbers had since recovered.
