The Teague Lady Lions basketball team hosted Mexia for a contest on Monday, Feb. 3. The game was originally for Friday, Jan. 31, but was postponed to Monday evening.
It turned out that Mexia played from behind the entire game and wound up on the short end of a 48-38 final score. The Lady Lions got off to a fast start in the opening period with a 10-2 run. However, a 7-0 spurt from Mexia that was capped off by a Haylee Fitch layup got the score to 10-9 in favor of Teague.
At the end of the first quarter, Teague held a 12-9 lead. Teague forward Bethanah Owens proved to be a difficult matchup for Mexia as she accounted for seven points in the first period.
A top of the key three pointer by Mexia guard Quinique Wisner got the Ladycats to within three at 19-16 with 1:09 to go before halftime. However, Teague finished the quarter strong. An uncontested layup by Teague guard A’shaiya Jones at the buzzer allowed the Lady Lions to take a 23-16 lead into the halftime break.
Mexia suffered through an offensive drought to start the third quarter. Teague took advantage and went on a 10-0 run while the Ladycats could not score. With 3:57 remaining in the quarter, guard Mycah Miller converted on one of two free throw attempts to give Mexia its first point of the period. After three quarters, Teague had built up a 37-23 lead.
With 2:44 to go in the game, Mexia’s Ja’Calinn Richardson received a Wisner inbound pass and scored on a layup to trim Teague lead to single digits at 44-35. Mexia got to with nine once more at 47-38 on an outside jumper by Mackenzie Harris, but that would be as close as the Ladycats could get down the stretch.
For Teague, Owens scored 18 points while Jones posted 22 points to lead all players in scoring. For Mexia, Richardson was her club’s leading scorer with 13 points. It was Teague’s fourth straight win while Mexia dropped its second game in a row. Both clubs are now tied for second in District 20-3A, Division 3 with identical 8-3 district records. Each team has also logged a win against one another in the season series.
Up next, Mexia plans to host Buffalo on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 6:30 p.m. while Teague will travel to Elkhart for a Feb. 4 contest starting at 6:30.
