The Mexia Blackcats basketball team moved to 10-0 in district play Monday, Feb. 3 by virtue of a resounding 88-55 win at Teague. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Friday, Jan. 31, but was postponed until Monday.
Mexia enjoyed a fast start and began the ballgame on an 11-2 run. The Blackcats trapping style of defense befuddled Teague ballhandlers in the backcourt and helped to create turnovers, which led to fastbreak opportunities for the Mexia offense.
Mexia guard Kelan Collins was very active with a number of transition buckets in the opening quarter for the Blackcats. Collins gave Mexia its first double-digit lead of the game at with a layup to make the score 15-4 in favor of Mexia. By then end of the quarter, Mexia enjoyed a 23-6 edge on the scoreboard.
Mexia showed no signs of slowing down and expanded their lead in the next quarter. A Collins assist to Jatayveus Bliutt for a fastbreak layup allowed the Blackcats to go ahead by 21 points at 37-16. By halftime, the Blackcats were comfortably ahead at 49-21.
Mexia maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half. Down the stretch, the Blackcats led by as many as 38 en route to a decisive 88-55 victory. A total of five Blackcats reached double figures in scoring. Kyran Bedford led the way with a game-high 20 points, Collins scored 18, and Altrie Farris accounted for 17. Billy Hicks and Bluitt also chipped in with 13 and 10 points respectively.
For Teague, Carter Stacks was the only player to reach double figures in scoring with 14 points. After the loss, Teague falls to 2-7 in district play and has lost four of its last five games.
Up next, Teague plans to travel to Elkhart for a Tuesday, Feb. 4 contest at 7:30 p.m. while Mexia plans to host Buffalo on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
