Whatever were gains, I now consider loss for the sake of Jesus Christ

Katy and I sure are enjoying our spring break. It has been a much needed break. Before we know it, summer will be here. I’m looking forward to summer and being able to relax a little more.

The Limestone County Fair kicks-off Saturday night, March 22, in Groesbeck with Ty Myers, Jacob Gonzalez and Logan Allison, and Cadillac Pearl before events are held all week long with the sale being held on Saturday, March 29.

Before we know it, the 103rd Freestone County Fair will be here. Mark your calendars for June 16-21. We are so blessed to have these county fairs in our area. The youth are truly blessed with businesses, organizations, and individuals who support them for all of their hard work and dedication with their projects.

Although life can get stressful at times, I am so blessed to have the Lord on my side. In the large scheme of things, the things of this earth truly do not matter. We need to make sure we have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

This week’s Bible verse is Philippians 4:7. It says, “But whatever were gains to me, I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.”

In my devotional that I am currently reading, I read the following message titled “Those Old Sports Trophies” from David Roper “Ẅhile in my son’s garage, I found the trophies he has won in his years of athletic competition. They were in a box - about to be thrown out. I thought of the blood, sweat, and tears that had gone into gaining those awards, yet now he was dumping them. They no longer had value.

It reminded me of a whimsical children’s poem by Shel Silverstein called “Hector the Collector”, which describes the things Hector had. He loved them more than shining diamonds, loved them more than glistenin’ gold. Then Hector called to all his friends, “Come and share my treasure trunk.” They came and looked and called it all junk.

So it will be at the end of our lives. The things we spent a lifetime working for will be nothing but junk. We’ll realize that the best things in life are not things.

But we can have Paul’s perspective: “Whatever were gains to me, I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.” (Philippians 4:7) Because we possess the surpassing greatness of knowing Jesus, we can keep a proper attitude about our possessions.”

My prayer for us this week is that we will not worry about collecting things during our time on this earth, but we will strive to be more Christlike daily because the things of this earth will just fade away. Until next week, make him famous in all that you do!
