The Fairfield Eagles defeated Groesbeck 11-0 and fell to Teague 10-7 this past week to move to 18-3 on the season and 10-1 in district play. The Eagles claimed the district title with their win over Groesbeck earlier in the week.
“I am incredibly proud of these young men for winning a district championship. District Champions was a goal we set from day one and our kids never lost sight of that goal. What makes me proudest is their ability to stay focused even when the pressure was on,” Coach Dalton Tharp said. “I am proud of what they have accomplished, and I’m even more excited about the foundation they have laid for the future. They have earned this District Championship, and it’s something they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.”
Fairfield traveled to Groesbeck on Tuesday night, April 15, and brought home an 11-0 victory over the Goats.
The Eagles scored three runs in the first, one in the second, one in the third, three in the fifth, and three in the fifth in the road win.
Fairfield had eleven hits during the game as Groesbeck had zero. Cal Wilson and Angel Serrato had two hits each as Justin Johnson, Gustavo Aguilera, Kohl Collins, and Connor Colvert each had one. The Goats had four errors in the game as the Eagles had one.
Aguilera pitched for the Eagles and struck out eleven batters.
The Eagles hosted the Teague Lions on Thursday, April 17. It was a battle until the very end as the Lions upset the Eagles in their last home game of the season 10-7 in eight innings of play.
Fairfield jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Wilson and Serrato scored on a hit by McGowan. Trip Egbert scored for the Lions in the top of the second on a Fortson single to make it a 2-1 game.
In the top of the third, Mario Cuevas hit a solo homerun and Egbert hit a three-run homerun to give Teague a 5-2 lead. In the bottom of the inning, McGowan scored on an Aguilera double and Aguikera scored on a hit by Collins to make it a one run game, 5-4.
Cuevas scored for the Lions in the top of the fifth on a Egbert single to make it a 6-4 ballgame.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Wilson and Serrato scored on a double by Johnson to tie the game at 6 and force an extra inning.
In the top of the eighth inning, Caden Crutcher, Blake Maggard, Kade Kormos, and Cuevas scored for the Lions with two outs to make it a 10-6 ball game. Collins scored for the Eagles in the bottom of the inning on a hit by Taylor, but it wasn’t enough as the Lions upset the Eagles 10-7 in eight innings.
The Eagles had eight hits in the game as the Lions had seven. Wilson and Serrato each had two hits as Johnson, Aguilera, Collins, and Landon Cockerell each had one hit. Teague had four errors in the game as Fairfield had one error.
Serrato pitched two and one thirds inning and struck out one batter. Colvert pitched four innings and struck out four batters.Cockerell pitched one and two thirds inning and struck out one batter.
Fairfield played Mexia on Tuesday night, April 22, to wrap-up district play before the playoffs.
