Fairfield Eagles prepare for the playoffs

The Fairfield Eagles defeated Mexia 6-1 in their last district game of the season and fell to Axtell 3-2 in a warm-up game this past week. Fairfield moves into the playoffs with an overall record of 19-4.

Fairfield will take on the Little River Academy Bees in a Bi-District Championship series at Axtell High School. The first game will be held on Thursday, May 1, at 5 p.m. The second game will be held on Friday, May 2, at 5 p.m. The third game, if necessary, will be played 30 minutes after the second game.

“The goal is to take one game at a time,” Coach Dalton Tharp said when asked about the team’s goals for the playoffs. “We want to focus on us and only us. It doesn’t matter who we play, we want to be relentless in our pursuit of playing our brand of baseball.”

Fairfield traveled to Axtell to take on the Longhorns, who were 24-0, on Friday, April 25, in a warmup game. The Eagles fell to the Longhorn 3-2.

The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Landon Washington scored on a single by Kohl Collins to right field. Collins scored on a single by Gustavo Aguilera to center field. The Longhorns scored a run in the bottom of the inning to make it a 2-1 game.

Axtell was determined to get the home win and managed to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for the 3-2 victory.

Fairfield had five hits in the game as Axtell had three. Cal Wilson, Justin Johnson, Landon Cockerell, Collins, and Aguilera each had a hit for the Eagles.

Aguilara pitched three innings and struck out eight batters. Connor Colvert pitched two innings and struck out one batter. Cockerell pitched an inning and Angel Serrato pitched one third of an inning.

The Eagles defeated the Mexia Blackcats 6-1 in their final district game on Tuesday, April 22.

Fairfield scored a run in the first, a run in the second, two runs in the third, one in the fourth, and one in the fifth inning. Mexia’s lone run came in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Blackcats had five errors in the game.

The Eagles had five hits in the game. Colvert had two hits as Serrato, Johnson, and Rustyn Taylor had one each.

Aguilera pitched five innings and struck out ten batters. Colvert pitched one inning and struck out one batter. Serrato pitched one inning and struck out three batters.
