Teague Sports Roundup for April 28 Lions prepping for first postseason since 2018

The Teague Lions are preparing for the baseball postseason. It’s been a bit since that phrase has been uttered, not since 2018, in fact, when members of the current team were still in elementary school.

The Lions (14-6 overall) secured their runner-up finish in District 20-3A with a 10-5 victory at home against Elkhart on April 22, ending league play with a 9-3 record that included a split with district champion Fairfield. In fact, Teague’s 10-7 victory at Fairfield was the Eagles’ only district setback.

The Lions will compete in the Class 3A Division II playoffs starting against Rogers (15-10-1), the fourth place team from 19-3A with a 6-8 league mark, in a best-of-three series, all games at the Waco ISD Baseball Field. The first game is Friday, May, 2 at 7 p.m., with Game 2 Saturday at 11 a.m. and a third game at 3 p.m., if needed.

“It’s all about cleaning up mental errors and competing at this point,” Teague head coach Richard Gunnels said. “Gotta find a way to get it done. We’ve done that well all year.”

Indeed they have. After dropping back-to-back games at Elkhart, 1-0, and 5-4 at home to Groesbeck, the Lions ended the regular season with four straight wins.

In fact, in their final three victories, the Lions won despite being outhit, including 9-6 against Elkhart. They had previously won 2-1 at home against Mexia while being outhit 5-1 and they were outhit 8-7 in the win at Fairfield.

They made up with caution at the plate, smart base running and solid plays in the field, which included a triple play against Mexia. Against Elkhart they drew seven walks and had six batters hit by a pitch.

In the regular season final, Teague’s offense included: Bo Bowers 3 hits, walk, 3 RBI, 2 stolen bases; Trip Egbert hit, 3 RBI; Braden Gauntt hit, RBI, hit by pitch, stolen bases; Kade Kormos hit, 2 walks, RBI, stolen bases; Brice Skinner 3 walks; Camerson Fortson walk, stolen bases; Caden Crutcher hit by pitch; Mario Cuevas 3 hit by pitch; Blake Maggard hit by pitch.

On the pitching mound, Bowers pitched 5 innings, gave up 6 hits, an earned run with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks. In relief, Cuevas pitched 2 innings with 3 hits, an earned run, 2 strikeouts and 2 walks.

The winner of the bidistrict matchup will face the winner between District 183A runner-up Scurry Rosser and McGregor, fourth in 173A, in the second round.

Golf

A productive high school boys season came to an end at the Class 3A Region III Tournament at Brenham Country Club. Lions coach Josh Ingram was pleased with the turnout for the 2025 season.

“The golf team has been up and down over the years, but I think we have more active in the sport this year than years past. Nineteen total golfers (boys and girls), the majority underclassmen, competed this year at district,” he said.

The Lions finished 10th as a team at regionals, led by freshman Carter Stacks with a two-round total of 160. He was 11th individually.

Other underclassmen and their regional finishes were freshman Dylan Gauntt, who shot 188, and junior Landon Evans, who ended with a 191. Also, playing as a medalist, junior Blaine Black posted a 193.

The two seniors who competed at regionals are Grayson Dancer with a 187 and Jay Craddick with a 199.

Rodeo

Teague is well represented in Regions 9 and 10 of the Texas High School Rodeo Association.

In Region 10, Harley Childs is in contention in a pair of events, along with the all-around competition. She is sixth in poles and ninth in barrel racing.

Childs is sixth in girls all-around standings and ninth in combined boys and girls all-around.

In Region 9, Rylee Stacks is fifth among breakaway ropers.
