THOMAS BROWNING SEGAR J

THOMAS BROWNING SEGAR J R.

Celebrating a Life Warm-Lived

Thomas Browning Segar Jr. passed away peacefully, with his wife Sharon by his side, on April 20th, 2025, at the age of 84 at Maine Veterans Home due to complications from diabetes. Thomas was known for his sass, intelligence, mechanical knowledge, dedication to his wife and cats, and his unwavering dislike of winter weather. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Sharon Bushey Segar, his only child, Ariel Segar, her husband, Daniel A. Husband, and his granddaughters, Lauren B. Husband (Josh), and Hayley A. Husband, all of Northwest Arkansas, 6 stepchildren, and step-grandchildren.

Thomas was born on August 30th, 1941, in Bellows Falls, Vermont. He was the only son of Constance Gale Howieson and her first husband, Thomas Browning Segar Jr, II. He grew up in Fitchburg, MA, until the age of 16, when his mother and her loving second husband, and his stepdad James Earl Howieson, moved their family of 3 to Dallas, TX for a job opportunity. Tom’s formative years were spent in the Dallas and Mesquite area, where he attended Samuel High School and developed a lifelong love of model trains and classic cars. Though he did not graduate, he later persevered and received his GED in his late 40s.

Tom enlisted in the United States Air Force and served four years in Europe, primarily as a radio operator. He spent his time off racing down the autobahn between France and Italy, much to the dismay of his mother. When his time in the Air Force was complete, he returned to Dallas, where he met and married his first wife, Ernestine Patrick Segar, on January 15th, 1965. Together, they raised their only child, Ariel, who was born in 1966.

He lived and worked as a truck driver in Dallas with Melton Trucking Lines and Safeway Stores until he and Ernestine moved to Fairfi eld, TX, in 1985 to start a small engine repair business with another friend. Tom became widowed on March 14th, 1990, when Ernestine passed away suddenly from pancreatic cancer.

God gave him another chance at love when he married his second wife, Sharon M. Bushey, on January 3rd, 2003. They lived in Fairfi eld until April 2024, when they moved to be closer to her children and grandchildren in South Paris, Maine,

Celebr

due to her and Tom’s waning health. Sharon gave Tom many happy years and patiently took care of him to the very end, even on the days that he was stubborn, impatient, and sassy. She was a blessing not only to him but to his daughter Ariel and her family as well.

Thomas was an active member of the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall of Fairfield, TX, until COVID and age kept him from attending meetings. He was known around Fairfield, TX as the “Small Engine Repair Guy,” and his and Sharon’s property was always covered with someone’s lawnmower that he was casually working on. During the 1960s and 70’s, he was an active member of the Corvair Club of Dallas and the University Park Bike Club, of which he was the resident “fix-it” guy.

In his free time, Thomas enjoyed collecting model trains, classic Corvairs and Citroens, tools, treading, and piddling with small engines, which brought him immense joy and satisfaction, but also the occasional lamentations. He especially enjoyed spending time with his wife, Sharon, and his cats.

Thomas Browning Segar Jr. leaves behind a legacy of intelligence, smart aleckness, a love of cheese, and a vast knowledge of peculiar trivia.

An internment of ashes was held on Saturday, May 3rd at Britton Family cemetery on Elm Hill in South Paris, Maine, where the family gathered to honor Thomas’s life.

Rest in peace, Thomas Browning Segar Jr. You will be missed, but your legacy will live on through the lives of those you touched.
