A body found in Norfolk, Va., has been confirmed to be that of missing sailor Angelina Resendiz, a 2023 Mexia High School graduate.
MHS art teacher Audry Wattles said she was notified of the discovery by Resendiz's mother, with whom she had been in contact since the young sailor disappeared May 29. Resendiz's body was found in a wooded area near Naval Station Norfolk Monday, June 9.
"I'm devastated and completely heart broken," said Wattles, who described Resendiz, 21, as being like a daughter to her. "The last time I talked to her was on Mother's Day."
Wattles said she had worked with Resendiz's family to spread the word on social media that she was missing and to ask for help to "bring her home safe." She noted that the family has told her foul play is suspected in the death.
Resendiz was last seen at her barracks. A Navy sailor has been placed in pretrial confinement by the Naval Criminal Investigation Service in connection with the death of Resendiz, according to the Virginian Pilot and Daily Press. Charges are pending.
Wattles said Resendiz was a strong, free spirit.
"She was an honest kid," Wattles said. "She loved deeply. She had gone through a lot in her life, but really built herself up."
Attempts by The Mexia News to contact the Norfolk Police Department public information officer were unsuccessful.
