Freestone County Budget Talks to Include New Jail

Plans for a new county jail could be made in the Freestone County Commissioners Court’s new fiscal year budget, according to County Judge Linda Grant.

“We have talked about building a new county jail from time to time,” Grant said at the court’s Wednesday, June 4, meeting. “We’ve never been able to reach an agreement and move forward.”

Grant acknowledged the need for a new jail had become more pressing. Her statement followed the reading of letters of complaint from Teague Chief of Police DeWayne Philpott and Wortham Interim Chief of Police Kelly Craig about Sheriff Jeremy Shipley refusing to jail suspects they recently arrested.
