I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes

“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord which made heaven and earth.” Thus the first two lines of Psalm 121, which is located in a series of psalms called the “Psalms of Ascent”, Psalms 120 to 134. There are fourteen in all, and the reason they are called the Psalms of Ascent is because they speak of going up to Jerusalem where the Temple of the Lord is located. Jerusalem was built upon a plateau, some 2,500 feet above sea level, and thus when worshippers were coming to Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish festivals set forth by the Lord in the Old Testament, they traveled in an upward manner as they entered into the city, the City in which the Lord had chosen to place His Name. As they came to Jerusalem, they were to sing these fourteen psalms in preparation to spend time with their Creator.

In all the din and noise of the world, you and I need to follow in their footsteps and take some time each day to listen to the Lord God in His Word, the Bible. We need to have a time in which we shut out the world and all the negative news and events that there is. We need to shut off the TV, the radio, the videos, and our phones, and shut the door on the world so that we can open the door to allow God to come into our lives so we can spend some time with Him. A Christian lady was asked, “Mary? What do you do all day?” “Well,” she replied, “the first thing I do is to get my hymnal and sing a few songs to the Lord. Then I get out my Bible and let God speak to me. And when I get tired of reading, and I cannot sing any more, I just sit still and let the Lord love me!” Isn’t that a great idea? The Bible tells us in Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am the Lord.” Is there a time in your life when you shut the door on the world and open it to God?

Then the rest of this verse says, “From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord who made the heavens and the earth.” Where does our help come from? It comes from the Lord who created the heavens and the earth. This is our faith of expectation. To come to God and not expect to receive anything is pointless; it’s foolishness and a waste of time. God is the God who not only hears our heart, but who can and will answer our deepest needs.
