Mexia Blackcats 5-3A DI (0-2) at Gatesville Hornets 12-4A DII (2-0) Friday, Sept. 12, at McKamie Stadium in Gatesville The Blackcats are hoping to come away with the upset this week against Gatesville. Last Friday night, Mexia dropped a hard fought contest to Fairfield, 66-0, at home. The Blackcat offense will need to have a breakout game to win it. Coach Aaron Nowell says his guys have the capability to improve all aspects of their team. “We will continue to work hard at becoming a better football team as we prepare for Gatesville this Friday night,” Coach Nowell said. While the offense has to get the ball into the end zone, the Blackcats defense will need to get wound up and put a stop to the Hornets offense. Look for Keydralin Hudson, Montrell Carter, Gabriel Gutierrez, and Kash Williams to lead the Mexia D in that direction. Gatesville enters Friday night’s contest with two big wins under their belt, the latest a 30-7 defeat of Glen Rose on the road. Hornet players to watch will be WR Amos Phillips (10153-1 against Glen Rose), QB Gehrig Keeton (14-19-186-1), RB Samuel Howard III, and athlete Brady Gist.
Groesbeck Goats 5-3A DI (1-1) at Centerville Tigers 12-2A DI (1-1) Friday, Sept. 12, at Tiger Stadium in Centerville 7:30 p.m.
The Goats are coming off a big win at home, as they beat McGregor 45-27. This was a huge win for Head Coach Nelson Kortis, as his Groesbeck team cranked up the offense and put up some big numbers statistically. QB Cannon Kortis threw for 179 yards and three touchdowns, and RB Ja’marya Hall rushed for 150 yards and two TDs on 24 carries. WR Avrian Ray was phenomenal, catching four passes for 104 yards and two TDs. Bubba Hutchinsonchippedina75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to help in the win. “I think overall our kids are starting to get more comfortable with our schemes both on offense and defense,” said Coach Kortis. It sure looks that way, especially offensively as the Goats had a total of 73 plays for 424 yards on the night. “We had a really good week of practice,” he said.”And I thought we competed well the whole game versus McGregor. Winning is always fun, and I’m extremely proud of our kids and the way they played the entire game. I told them that if we played hard for four quarters that we would be tough to beat and they did that this week.” Indeed they did, and expect the Goats to play just as hard, if not harder this week against Centerville. Now the Tigers enter Friday night at 1-1, after getting shutout by the Crawford Pirates last weekend, 20-0. Centerville will be looking for a way to move back into the win column, and they’ll need RB Amarius Phillips, RB Wyatt Burleson, and WR Jeromy Rosales to find their groove to make it happen.
