In looking at the events of the past few days the national news organizations are full of talking heads screaming that the end of the nation is at hand and that a world apocalypse is here. There will be civil war in the streets and massive bloodshed they predict. We need to remember what Winston Churchill said “that America generally does the right thing, after it has tried everything else”. For the vast majority of Americans life goes on in a predictable manner, we get up and try to have a meaningful day, deal with the problems that arise without making them worse, get a decent night’s sleep and get ready to do it again the next day. In a democracy, elections are about deciding the course of our society, and as Dick Cheney said, “elections have consequences”. The nation voted for the changes that are now taking place in the 2024 election. We will all get an opportunity in 2026 to vote our approval of these changes or to order a course correction. This is the only opportunity we as citizens have to influence the future of the country but only slightly above 50% of eligible voters participate. Regardless of what various commenters say, we have the freest elections in the world. The people I’ve met who handle the election process are very serious about following all the correct procedures. However, in Russia, if you vote the wrong way, you might fall down a staircase. Remember each day you have is a gift from the Lord. Don’t let some pessimist steal it.
