What a great Week 5 folks! Lots of teams putting up points on the scoreboard this past week, as it looks like the offenses are starting to click. I’m sure some of the area coaches will be working with their teams defensive skills during practice sessions this week. We had one homecoming spoiler, and a huge comeback win in another HOCO game.
Looking at District 5-3A DI, the Mexia Blackcats traveled to Cameron to take on the Yoemen, as the non-district portion of their schedule came to a close. Mexia took a 6-0 lead going into the second quarter, but Yoe score 21 points to move ahead at the half, 21-18. The Yoemen added 14 more in the third quarter to increase their lead by 17. The Blackcats tried to put together a comeback in the final quarter, outscoring the Yoe 14-7, but it wasn’t quite enough as Cameron came out on top by the score of 42-32. QB Ja’Darrius Davis led the Blackcat offense with 17 completions on 30 attempts, for 262 yards and two touchdowns. Kelan Collins caught seven Davis passes for 184 yards and a TD, Kadyn Molina made six catches for 56 yards, and Rylon Greer caught one pass for an 11-yard touchdown. RB Markaveon Boyd added to his season rushing totals, finishing the game with 21 carries for 180 yards and a TD. Collins got in on Mexia’s run game with two carries for 68 yards and a TD.
Defensively for the Blackcats, Kashton Williams led the team with 17 total tackles (8 solo, 9 assists); Roy Gowan finished with nine total tackles, and Braylon Anderson got in on four tackles and made an interception. Mexia has a bye this week in preparation for the start of district play beginning October 10th.
