ALICE ELOISE (RUCKER) NEWSOM C ARTWRIGHT
Alice Eloise Rucker Newsom Cartwright, age 95, of Hubbard, TX, passed away in her sleep on October 17, 2025, at Mexia LTC Nursing and Rehab facility in Mexia, TX.
Alice was born in Coleman, TX on September 19, 1930. She attended Teague and Gatesville ISDs. She graduated at the early age of 16 from Gatesville High School in 1946. She began a long career of giving at the Mexia State School. She soon met and later married Willis Allen Newsom on June 19, 1948. Together they began their family life in Munger, TX. In 1961 the Newsom’s moved to Waco, TX where Alice attended beauty college and soon began work as a beautician for several years. In the fall of 1971, Allen and Alice built a home in Hubbard, TX and relocated there. Alice again began working at Mexia State School until she retired as a Unit Supervisor. During this time, she also received an Associate’s of Applied Science in Child Development/Special Persons and Medication Aide permit.
Alice had many gifted talents to include sewing, crocheting, painting, poetry writing, cooking/canning, cosmetology, basic mechanical skills and she had a green thumb for growing flowers and gardening. She enjoyed being with and taking care of people. She was known for her strong work ethic, her love of God, and her dedication to people and her community. Alice will be remembered for her kindness, integrity, and unwavering love for God, her family and friends. Her laughter and wisdom were gifts to everyone who knew her, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy of grace.
Alice was preceded in death by her two beloved husbands, Willis Allen Newsom (October 2004) and William Alvin Cartwright (February 2015), her parents Flavel and Lottie Rucker, three sisters Evelyn Henderson, Bonnie Manual, and Faye Woodard, and one grandchild, Sasha Newsom.
She is survived by her two siblings: Shirley Hunter of Oklahoma and Flavel Lee Rucker and wife Shirley of Mesquite, TX. Her four children: Alynn Mitchell and husband Randall of Mt. Calm, TX; Aniece Newsom and extended family of Hubbard, TX; A’Neil Newsom and wife Ginger of South Carolina; and Amy Isbell and husband Gary of Coolidge, TX. She also leaves behind five grandchildren: Kevin Wright and wife Kelly of Sherman, TX; Daneille Nantz and husband Nate of Winnebago, IL; Nicholas Newsom of Bay City, TX; Heather Elrod-Isbell and wife Monika of Hubbard, TX; and Blake Isbell of San Antonio, TX. Alice is fondly remembered by her 8 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the Fairfield and Northcrest Church of Christ, the personnel of Gentle Transitions Hospice for their loving care during Alice’s end-of-life transition, and the staff at Mexia LTC for their daily attention and compassion.
Family visitation will be held Friday, October 24, 2025, from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Northcrest Church of Christ, located at 915 Tehuacana Street, Mexia, TX. The celebration of Alice’s life will follow at 3:00 pm, officiated by Jason Schick of Fairfield Church of Christ. Immediately following the service, interment will be at Union Cemetery, Freestone, TX.
Alice’s legacy of kindness and faith will live on in all who knew and loved her.
