Countdown to the 2025 Texas High School Football Playoffs Begin this Week
Coolidge’s Devonta Johnson (1) takes the handoff for a big gain during the Yellowjackets Friday night game with the Gholson Wildcats. Coolidge won by mercy rule, 54-6. We are T-Minus Week 11, and that means the playoffs start next week for Texas High School Football teams. Fairfield is a shoe-in for the No. 1 seed in District 9-3A Division I, and next door in Limestone County, the Coolidge Yellowjackets – barring an upset by Penelope – should make it in the final playoff spot in District 11-1A/Six-Man DI. The Teague Lions are currently in a quad-tie with Westwood – yes, they got handled by the Eagles last Friday night – Crocket, and Diboll. On paper, Westwood should take out their frustrations on poor 1-8 Huntington; Teague and Diboll go at it, and Crockett will try to bite their way to a win, but they’re playing Fairfield. If I had my say, I’d say that the No. 3 seed will come down to the loser of the Teague- Diboll game, with the loser in a tie for the No. 4 seed. The winner will be in a tie for the No. 2 seed with probable winner, Westwood.

Whew! Talk about a wee bit complex, there’s nothing more perplexing when teams are tied in the standings, fighting over the last playoff seed. Heck, any playoff seeding!

In District 5-3A DI, Groesbeck, Maypearl, and Mexia could find themselves in a three-way tie for the No. 4 playoff seed. That’s IF Groesbeck beats Maypearl, and the Blackcats fall to Grandview. IF Maypearl wins, and Mexia wins, Groesbeck is out, and the Panthers and Blackcats will be tied for the No. 4 seed. Believe it or not folks, THIS is the most exciting time of the year, to see who makes the cut, and who doesn’t in the final week of district play. Yes. Yes, I did. I forgot to mention that Whitney is in the No. 1 spot, and the No. 2 seed has West and Grandview tied. So, if West beats Whitney this Friday, followed by a Zebra (Cake) – my ode to Little Debbie snacks, and be honest. Who doesn’t enjoy a Zebra Cake or two, or three. Mums the word on that last number. Back to “so, if” that would throw the No. 1 seed into a three-way tie.
