Stay Merry, Not Misled

Contributed by Freestone County Sheriff Jeremy Shipley

Editor’s Note: When asking around for quotes from area law enforcement for a story on scammers, we liked Sheriff Shipley’s very thorough answer so much we decided to print the whole thing. Take advice from a pro and avoid getting scammed this holiday season!

As the holiday season is approaching, we want to wish everyone a holiday full of joy and love, and togetherness with family and friends. Unfortunately, this is also a time when we should remind you that some people use the holidays to take advantage of people’s generosity and charitable spirit. To help ensure our citizens, specifically our older adult community, don’t get taken advantage of by these scammers and con artists during this season of giving, we want to help raise awareness of common scams and frauds that will start occurring during the holidays. We are hopeful that we can work together and help each other enjoy the holidays without you getting taken advantage of and our law enforcement getting overwhelmed trying to investigate these deceptive crimes.
