The Berlin Airlift was a 15-month operation by the American Airforce to keep West Berlin from starving to death in 1948 after Stalin’s Soviet Union closed off all land access to the city that was 400 miles inside East Germany. After unloading, the planes would be twisting in the sky over the city for the long trip home. During this turn young grinning American airmen would dump sacks of Hershey Bars out in the sky to float down to the running boys in the streets. One boy recalled wondering where these men came from that seemed to be able to do the impossible and make it look easy.
Fast forward 75 years and we have left that confidence lying somewhere along the road in our past. Leaders who promote fear and anger are successful while those who propose policies to deal with problems are left in the lurch. We see every pebble as a boulder we can’t get over and the reason is it’s someone else’s fault. The bottom line is that you may not be able to solve other’s problems, but you can make an effort to solve some of your own. A lot of times the difference between losing and winning is not ability but attitude. The main difference between the 75 years is economic times are better, but our character is worse. Back then we rolled up our sleeves while today we just pull up the covers.
