What A Wonderful Name

”Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, There’s just something about that name! Master, Savior, Jesus, Like the fragrance after the rain, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Let all heaven and earth proclaim! Kings and kingdoms will all pass away, But there’s something about that name.” This beautiful song was recorded by Bill and Gloria Gaither in 1992.

Mattew’s Gospel tells us that when the angel announced to Joseph that Mary had become pregnant by the Holy Spirit, he told Joseph, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to name Him Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.” Of course, He was sent not just to save the Jewish people, but to save the whole world from their sins. “Whosoever believes in Him,” John wrote, “will not perish, but will have everlasting life.” The Apostle Paul would later write, “Whosoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.” And Peter would write in his first letter, “For Christ also suffered for sins, once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that He might bring you to God.” He who is righteous, Jesus, would die for the sins of us who are the unrighteous, in order to bring us into His salvation and Kingdom. This is who Jesus is, our Savior, and what He came to do, to take our place on the cross so that we might believe in Him and have everlasting life.

Many years ago when Lord Tennyson was Poet Laureate, he was walking one day with a friend in his garden talking on the subjects of public interest of that time. The poet’s friend was a believer in the Lord Jesus, and sought as opportunities offered to testify for Him. Pausing for a moment in their conversation, he took the poet by the arm and quietly asked, “What do you think of Jesus Christ?” Tennyson pointed to a flower blooming in all its beauty by the pathway and said, “As the sun is to that flower, so is Jesus Chirst to me.” Can you say that? Can I say that? As the sun is to the flower, the source of its life and salvation, so is Jeus Christ to me, the very source of my salvation. “For He shall save His people from their sins.” Have you asked Jesus Christ to save you from your sins?
