Ronald Merle “Butch” Self, Sr., 82, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather, was born on November 10, 1943, in Dallas, Texas. He peacefully went to be with his Lord and Saviour on November 28, 2025, with his loving wife Juquita at his right side and daughter Michelle at his left side.
Butch grew up in Dallas, Texas, and attended school at Wilmer-Hutchins. During his senior year, he decided to leave school and join the United States Air Force, where he served four years and became assigned to crypto communications. In November 1963, he had gone to lunch one day, and when he returned to his station and knocked on the door, his senior officer demanded his ID. He said, “But you know me.” His senior officer again demanded his ID, so he showed it and then was allowed to reenter the crypto room where he was told that JFK had been assassinated. While serving, he met Pat Delancey, also a member of the USAF, and they married on February 6, 1965.
After leaving the USAF, he went to work in the oil field, where he drove a frac water truck until the company he was working for went out of business. He then embarked on a cross-country journey as an 18-wheeler driver. After retiring from driving, he and Pat purchased and operated a store at Cleburne State Park.
Pat went to be with our Lord on June 21, 1998, and about a year after that, he sold the store to move to Quitman, Texas, where he would be close to his father. That is where he found his first love, Juquita’s, address in his mother’s old address book. He contacted her, and they reunited, marrying on November 16, 2002, at Outreach Ministries in Coolidge, Texas. They spent the next 23 years happily married in Limestone County. He worked at Walmart, and for a while, he and Juquita were park hosts at the Confederate Reunion Grounds. Their last job before fully retiring was performing gate guard duties for a customer of Michelle’s in the oilfield. He and Juquita faithfully attended Outreach Ministries together until his death.
Butch is survived by his loving wife and first love, Juquita (née Havens) Self of Shiloh; his three children from his first marriage, daughter Denise Messer of Watauga; son Ronald Self, Jr. of Irving; son James Self and wife Laura of Sheboygan, MI; his two bonus children from Juquita, son John Hunt and wife Susan of Spearfish, SD, daughter Michelle (née Hunt) Brown and husband Dan of Teague; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren with another one on the way; three sisters, Kay Self of Midlothian; Elaine Kearl and husband Lenny of Fort Collins, CO; Rhonda Starnes of Nacona; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Ruth (née Delancey) Self, parents Myrle and Imogene Self, and brothers Perry Self and Randy Self Please visit our website at “http://www.bowersfuneralhome. net” www.bowersfuneralhome. net to sign the online guestbook or leave a message for the family.
