Observances

As the old song goes, something’s happening here but it aint just exactly clear. Sometimes you have to back a long way off from the trees to see the forest. The one thing that has happened all over the world is the greatest generation has gone out to the cemetery leaving all the rest of us behind. The last greatest generation president of America was George Herbert Walker Bush and the beginning of the turn came when he was rejected by the now MAGA portion of the GOP then led by Newt Gingerich, Speaker of the House in 1992.

A characteristic of that older leadership was a quiet deliberate thought process before taking steps that had positive results but cause short term disapproval. When he drove Iraq out of Kuwait but refused to fight on to Bagdad and take over the country, the majority of the country disapproved. Likewise, when he was willing to raise some taxes to close the budget deficit and get the national debt under control, his own party disapproved leading to his defeat in 1992.

He was just an example of the type of leadership that came from the greatest generation and we may not ever see their like again.
