To the Editor, I’m a Fairfield mom, and I’ve been paying close attention to what’s happening with the Social Studies TEKS revision process at the State Board of Education.
In case you haven’t seen it: one of the nine content advisors shaping what Texas kids will learn in social studies for the next decade — a historian named Dr. Donald Frazier — received a $70,000 grant from a conservative think tank called the Texas Public Policy Foundation. The grant was awarded specifically for developing these very standards. He didn’t disclose it. All five Democratic board members have called for an independent investigation and asked that the process be paused. The Republican majority has so far refused.
Our own SBOE representative, Tom Maynard, appointed Dr. Frazier — and has publicly dismissed the conflict of interest concerns as a “smear tactic.”
