Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor, Simple question: Do you think advertising works? Does it improve sales, does it create interest, does it create traffic? It’s probably not fair to ask such a question in a newspaper, which derives much of its revenue from advertising ... the answer is a resounding YES.

If it didn’t work, companies would not have huge advertising budgets. If it didn’t work, there wouldn’t be millionaire ‘content creators’ on the internet. If it didn’t work, we wouldn’t be deluged with candidate ads in election season.

It was explained to me once that if you were giving away $100 bills on the town square at 6 am on Saturday, nobody would show up unless you announced it ... somehow. Buy a radio ad -- just one -- and you’d be mobbed. A TV spot might cause a riot. Advertising works, just as NOT advertising almost ensures failure.
