The Fairfield Lady Eagles defeated the Franklin Lady Lions and the Mexia Lady Blackcats to move to 25-11 overall and 9-0 in district play.
“I am so proud of our continued success in the district, but the highlight of our week was definitely the matchup with Franklin on Tuesday night,” Coach Kelly Ridge said. “We needed to be pushed, to see what we’re made of, to truly work on gametime adjustments, and in the end, that victory helped prepare us for playoffs. Our weaknesses were exposed, so now we know what needs to happen to make it deep in the playoffs.”
On Tuesday, Oct. 15, the Lady Eagles held Parent Night before the game. Fairfield and Franklin battled it out as the Lady Eagles came out on top in five sets. The Lady Lions won the first set 25-22. Fairfield came back with a big 25-12 victory in the second set, before Franklin took the third set 25-12. The Lady Eagles won the fourth set 25-20 to force a fifth set. Fairfield came out on top with the home win with a 15-9 victory.
“I was so proud of our mental toughness during this match. After losing the third set, I knew we would find out where we were mentally. We came out strong in the fourth and carried that same perseverance into the fifth set,” Ridge said. “Because the fifth set is only to 15, we knew we had to take the lead early and hold onto it. Unforced errors, and especially back-to-back unforced errors, can make or break a fifth set. We kept our unforced errors low, which was a difference-maker.”
Fairfield hosted the Groesbeck Lady Goats on Friday, Oct. 18, and won in three straight sets 25-15, 2516, 25-15.
“We would like to finish the 2nd round of district with straight set wins,” Ridge said. “Getting 1% better is still our daily goal, so if we can walk out of the gym after any given practice knowing we did that, a deep playoff run is a definite possibility.”
Fairfield traveled to Elkhart on Tuesday night, Oct. 22, to take on the Lady Elks. The Lady Eagles will host the Buffalo Lady Bison on Friday, Oct. 25, before wrapping-up district play next Tuesday, Oct.29, on the road against the Mexia Lady Blackcats.
The Lady Eagles have a play-off warm-up game scheduled against the Leon Lady Cougars on Friday, Nov. 1, at 4 p.m.
“Please come out and support these girls as they continue to dominate District 20-3A and prepare for the playoffs,” Ridge said.
