The Mexia Ladycats and Fairfield Lady Eagles wrapped up the regular volleyball season Tuesday night, Oct. 29, in Mexia. It was Fairfield coming away with a win in straight sets, 25-11, 25-20, 25-15.
Early in the first set, the match was tied at 8, after Mexia scored three straight points thanks to a strong service performance from Ja'Calinn Richardson. After that, Fairfield dominated the rest of the set with a 17-3 run. A baseline kill from Madelyn Morrison was the final point in Fairfield's run that allowed the Lady Eagles to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
In the second set, Fairfield led by as many as five as Mexia remained close throughout. With the score 18-16 in favor of Fairfield, the Lady Eagles made consecutive errors that tied the game at 18. The score again was tied at 19 before Fairfield scored six of the final seven points of the set. A service ace by Blayke Brackens clinched the set for the Lady Eagles, who went ahead 2-0.
The final set saw Fairfield score the first five points. They led by as many as 11 and enjoyed a 19-9 lead late in the set. A kill by Richardson pulled Mexia to within nine at 19-10. With the score 22-11 in favor of Fairfield, Richard recorded a kill and a service ace in succession to get Mexia to within nine again at 22-13. Fairfield outscored Mexia 3-2 from that point to close out the match in straight sets. An emphatic kill from Avery Strait capped off the Fairfield victory.
Mexia ends the year with two district wins and without a playoff berth. Fairfield suffered only one district defeat and earned first place in District 20 3A-3. Up next, Fairfield will travel to China Spring for a Monday bi-district playoff matchup with Little River Academy.
