As Dick Cheney used to say elections have consequences, so it is now important for individual citizens to peer into the future and determine how those consequences will impact our lives. As the first sentence starts out in “A Tale of Two Cities”, it will be the best of times for some and the worst of times for others.
In football terms the country is going to be to be like the 1954 Texas Aggies going to preseason camp in Junction with Bear Bryant. They went down in three buses and came back in one bus half full. There will be an attempt to reverse course started in 1932 by President Roosevelt called the New Deal to provide governmental programs that would redistribute income from the wealthy to lower levels of society. The reasoning was that the capitalistic excesses of industrialization led to the collapse of the economy. As the succeeding 90 years passed additional programs were added that ultimately created the middle class. This also led to a build up of national debt that has become alarmingly large.
The question now is whether society can endure the pain of shifting back to a more unfettered capitalist economy. As usual there will be huge winners and vast losers and people need to start making decisions today with an eye to the future. However, in a democracy the voter’s rule and they have spoken they are willing to try.
