Fairfield Mayor Kenneth Hughes announced his retirement effective Tuesday, Jan. 14 2025, during the monthly City of Fairfield City Council meeting earlier this month.
Hughes joined the Fairfield City Council as Council Member Place 5 in 2009. He then served as Mayor Pro-Tem before being elected as the Mayor of Fairfield in May 2018. In total, he has served 16 years in city government.
Hughes read the following letter during the City Council meeting “City Council Members, City Staff, and Residents of City of Fairfield, It is with a deep sense of gratitude and fulfillment that I announce my retirement as mayor as of January 14, 2025, concluding 16 years of service in city government. These years have been among the most rewarding of my life, and it has been a true honor to work on behalf of our community.
Reflecting on our journey together, I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished. From creating a transparent city government to enhancing our city’s quality of life, we have built a stronger and more vi- brant Fairfield through shared dedication and hard work. I am grateful to the city council members, city staff, and each of you for the support, collaboration, and commitment you have shown.
The decision to step down is bittersweet, yet I am excited about what lies ahead – for both myself and our city. I have full confidence that the foundations we have built together will continue to flourish under new leadership, and I look forward to seeing how Fairfield grows in the years to come.
Thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving you and for all that we have achieved together. I will always cherish my time as your mayor and as a member of this incredible community.
A heartfelt thanks to everyone.
Kenneth D. Hughes” The City Council will need to fill the position with a Mayor Pro-Tem to complete the term, which ends next year.
