Fairfield to host annual boys, girls basketball tourney this weekend

Twenty-one other teams will be coming into town this weekend, Dec. 12-14, to make up the 21st Annual Fairfield Invitational Basketball Tournament. There are twelve girls teams and eleven boys teams in the tournament.

“When the Johnson Activity Center was completed in 2003, I was president of the Chamber of Commerce and wanted to showcase our beautiful new facility and gym infrastructure while increasing tourism,” FISD Board President Kevin Benedict said.

This year’s ticket prices are Day Pass Adults - $6.00 and Students - $4.00. Tournament Passes are Adults $15.00 and Students - $8.00. Pool A for the girls tournament includes Madisonville, Teague, and Neches. Fairfield, Burnet, and Mt. Vernon makes up Pool B. Teams for Pool C include Connally, Taylor, and Little River Academy. Martin’s Mill, China Spring, and Mexia are in Pool D.

“We have several ranked teams in the state coming to the girls tournament this year,” Coach Sally Whitaker said. “This will be a great event for the community.”

The Lady Eagles will take on Mt. Vernon at 12:00 p.m. and Burnet at 6 p.m. on Thursday in the maroon gym.

“This year’s tournament is going to be tough,” Whitaker said. “We have great competition and we are looking forward to competing.”

Pool A for the boys tournament includes Palmer, Azle, and Connally. La Vega, Athens, and Maypearl make up Pool B. Teams for Pool C include Decatur, Mexia, and Bullard. Fairfield and Brewer are in Pool D.

The Eagles will play Brewer at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in the maroon gym.

Friday games will begin at 9:00 a.m. with the last game of the day starting at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday will include bronze, silver, and gold championship and consolation games in both the maroon and gold gyms. Game times are scheduled for 9:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 3:00 p.m., and 4:30 p.m.

“This is a great weekend of basketball,” Whitaker said. “Please come and support both the girls and boys teams.”
