Not too much to report this week as we were able to begin the year by conducting a few trips and then the POLAR EXPRESS HIT WITH COLD TEMPERATURES, RAIN AND STRONG WINDS and we shut it down for the week! The Catfish were biting aggressively on those early 2025 trips and we enjoyed fast action on both Blue and Channel Cats by fishing Coves near Fisherman’s Point Marina as well as windblown Shorelines. On those days, we avoided making the long, windy boat ride up the Richland Creek to the areas we normally fish, “hid out” in a couple of coves on the South Shoreline near the Marina and made “Lemonade out of Lemons”! All our Customers went home with some nice filets for their Fish Fry and even more memories and pictures to add to the scrapbook.
When we are challenged by Mother Nature on a big Lake like RC, we often cancel a trip on a strong North/Northwest Wind day. However, we can also often fish on a strong South Wind day and still manage to have a good trip. We find a Cove protected from the Wind with some timber, throw out a bit of chum (Range Cubes and Sour Maize) and usually have some Catfish on the hook in fifteen minutes or so. As usual, Mr. Whiskers Cheese Punch Bait ( www.whiskerseeker.com ) on a treble hook is our bait of choice.
Based on the last few trips, I’m guessing we will be Catfishing for the next month or so and waiting for the White Bass and Hybrid Stripers to reappear after their Spring Spawn. Last year, we were catching Whites and Hybrids by late February and had our first full Ice Chest on February 24th. Until then, we can almost always count on the Catfish to give us plenty of action! We have plenty of openings on Weekdays and most Saturdays in January and February. If you’re planning a Spring Break or April/May trip with us, I encourage you to email or call now as we’re down to just a couple of Spring Saturday openings and now the Weekdays are starting to fill.
