Smith wins ‘Grand,’ at commercial heifer contest

Eleven Freestone County students competed in the 2025 Freestone County Fair Youth Commercial Heifer Contest on Saturday, Jan. 11. When all was said and done Grace Smith of Teague FFA won Grand Champion and Ivy Wren of Fairfield 4-H won Reserve Champion overall.

Eleven Freestone County students competed in the 2025 Freestone County Fair Youth Commercial Heifer Contest on Saturday, Jan. 11. When all was said and done Grace Smith of Teague FFA won Grand Champion and Ivy Wren of Fairfield 4-H won Reserve Champion overall.

This was the third year for the commercial heifer contest to be held by the Freestone County Fair and Rodeo Association. Circle H Ag Services, LLC owned by Chris Hoag along with the Limestone County Go Texan committee cooked and donated the dinner.

Sophie Craig of Teague 4-H exhibited the Champion Cattle. Tripp Wren of Fairfield 4-H showed the Best in County Pen.

In the record book contest, Smith won the senior division and Maze Cathey of Teague 4-H won the junior division.

Smith won the senior division and T. Wren won the junior division for the written test competition.

Smith and Craig won the interview for the senior and junior divisions respectively.

A total of $56,700 was raised on the eleven pens, not including add-ons. The following is a list of the sale order for the pen of twos Lot 1 - Grace Smith, Teague FFA - TX Farm Credit $7,000; Lot 2 - Ivy Wren, Fairfield 4-H - Diamond T Ranch $5,000; Lot 3 - Tripp Wren, Fairfield 4-H - JP Clopton $5,000; Lot 4 - Sophie Craig, Teague 4-H - Gafford Cattle $5,600; Lot 5 - Memphis Wren, Fairfield 4-H - Jerred and Mallorie Swinburn $5,000; Lot 6 - Savannah Stutts, Fairfield 4-H - 3W $4,200; Lot 7 - Kaedyn Ovalle, Teague FFA - Gafford Cattle $5,000; Lot 8 - Keatyn Ovalle, Freestone Community 4-H - Ovalle Construction $5,000; Lot 9 - Maze Cathey, Teague 4-H - 3W $6,000; Lot 10 - Madilyn Steen, Teague 4-H - 3W $4,500; Lot 11 - Mabry Steen, Teague 4-H - Jerred and Mallorie Swinburn $4,400.

The 2025 Freestone County Fair will be held June 16-21 this year at the W.L. Moody Reunion Fairgrounds in Fairfield.
