Cities in Freestone County are seeing a significant increase in sales tax collections so far this year.
Fairfield, Teague and Wortham are all showing increases over last year in sales tax revenue rebates, but Streetman has just about doubled its year-to-date collections.
The numbers are reported by state Comptroller Gelnn Hegar. The allocations are based on sales made in December 2025. Businesses collect sales tax, the state takes its share and sends the rest back to the taxing entities. Across the state, $1.5 billion was rebated.
And, Streetman definitely got its share. The city collected $18,407 in sales tax in December 2025, compared to just $7,423 in December 2023 – a 148% increase. Year-to-date, Streetman has collected $28,925, a 92.25% increase over last year’s total of $15, 043.
Streetman Mayor Johnny Robinson said he attributes the sales tax increase for that city to online parcel deliveries.
“The post office is just overwhelmed with orders,” Robinson said. “When a resident of a city orders something online, the city where they live gets that sales tax revenue. We get some really big orders.”
Fairfield, the county’s largest tax base, brought in $291,439, a 3.5% increase over lasts year’s $281,583. Year-to-date, Fairfield has collected $492,864, a 3.47% increase ofver last year’s $476,292.
Teague brought in $112,594, a 27.4% increase of last year’s $88,353. Yearto- date, Teague has brought in $184,051, a 30% increase over last year’s $141,778.
Wortham brought in $34,776, a 48% increase over last year’s $23,489. Year-todate, Wortham is about 40% better – $60,301 vs. $43,166.
Wortham Mayor Pellie Goolsby said she believes the sales tax revenue increase can be attributed to the restaurant The Gin attracting people from other areas to spend money in the city and sales by Indio Contract Services, which opened a facility in the city.
