A host of members of the Teague Lions and Lady Lions were named to the Texas High School Coaches Association Academic All-State Teams for several fall and winter sports recently. The list of accolades includes: Girls basketball - First team: Jayci Phillips; honorable mentions - Bethanah Owens and Keyanna Oatman garnering second-team honors.
Boys basketball - Second team: James Ingram.
Football - First team: James Ingram, Matthew Ponce.
To be nominated for this academic all-state honors, an athlete, trainer or manager must meet the following criteria: *Be in good standing with the team.
*Be of good moral character.
*Be a senior.
*Have an overall grade point average of 92 or above (including courses from grades 9-11 and courses completed from grade 12). Weighted GPAs accepted.
BASEBALL
Despite collecting more than twice as many hits as visiting Fairfield, the Teague Lions dropped their first District 20-3A baseball contest of the season, 9-8, on March 25 in a battle for first place in the league. Teague had a 12-5 advantage in hits Trip Egbert led the Lions (10-4, 4-1 in district) on offense against Fairfield with three hits, including a pair of doubles, and a walk.
Also vs. Fairfield: Blake Maggard 2 hits, 2 RBI, 2 stolen bases; Bo Bowers 2 hits, hit by pitch; Brice Skinner 2 hits, walk, 2 RBI;Kade Kormas double; Mario Cuevas hit, walk, stolen base; Cameron Fortson hit; Braden Gauntt walk, hit by pitch, RBI.
The Lions were second behind Fairfield in the league as the week began. They were playing at Elkhart at press time. They host Groesbeck on April 4 at 6 p.m. and, after a bye, travel to Westwood on april 11 at 7 p.m.
SOFTBALL
The Lady Lions (6-14, 3-4 in District 20-3A ) had their three-game win streak ended and struggled to a 12-0 home loss against Fairfi eld on March 25. Grace Smith had the lone hit for Teague, with Andrea Jones and Mycah Newsom each drawing a walk.
On March 28, the Lady Lions lost 16-5 at home against Buffalo. Marley Philpott had two hits, one a double, with two RBI. Newsom also doubled with a pair of RBI.
James, Laynee Morrow and Rylee Stacks each had a hit, while Kylee Silar walked and Grace Smith and Harley Childs were each hit by a pitch.
Teague was playing at Elkhart at press time and hosts Groesbeck on April 4 at 11 a.m. After a bye they visit Westwood on April 11 at 7 p.m.
RODEO
Harley Childs of Teague is among the leaders in a host of categories in Region 10 of the Texas High School Rodeo Association entering this week. She is sixth in the girls all-around standings.
Childs sits in sixth place in poles, ninth in barrel racing, 11th in breakaway roping, 13th in team roping and 15th in goat tying.
Her teammate, Rylee Sacks, is in fifth in breakaway roping in Region 9.
