Spring officially arrived last week, and with it came windy, cooler mornings. Still, warm lunches satisfied the Center crowd. Hats off to Darlene, Virginia, and Daniel, our dedicated cooks in Fairfield, for their hard work!
A special thanks goes to our good friend Carl, who frequently provides delicious sweets to start our mornings. The fresh assortment of donuts was the perfect accompaniment to coffee. We also appreciate Sharon, who once again brought her coconut and oatmeal cookies — they’re a favorite at our early bird table.
Thank you to Debbie McDonald for providing the popular ranch dressing that many of our dining room guests enjoy. She not only consistently contributes to our center, but she is also frequently seen clearing tables and helping in the dining room. We’ve missed Scott and Debbie this past week. We understand everyone is busy with appointments, but we look forward to their return next week.
We had a fun-filled and busy Wednesday and missed Sonya at bingo last week; she was off visiting her youngest grandson for a couple of weeks. A big thank you to our anonymous sponsor for enhancing the fun with excellent bingo and blackout prizes. We celebrated March birthdays on March 26th after lunch and before bingo. Although not everyone could attend, those who did enjoyed Coke and root beer floats with homemade vanilla ice cream, provided by our anonymous sponsor and Juanice. March birthday celebrants included Charnell, Roger, Jimmy Rischer, and Juanice.
We hit the jackpot with London calling the first part of bingo. She and three of her adorable children — Kaehler, Greylyn, and Landon — had lunch and enjoyed ice cream floats with us. The children thoroughly enjoyed bingo! I can’t thank our dedicated drivers enough — Sue, Bill Allison, and Steven Senter — for going the extra mile with extra meal deliveries last week. It’s nice to see the rain returning this week; many people needed it.
Join us for morning coffee and often some donuts. You can also come early to play a game of dominoes. Bring a partner or find one when you arrive. We look forward to another great month, so come see us, bring a friend, and enjoy!
Please remember to pray for the men and women serving in our military and for our country and community.
Our heartfelt sympathies go out to those who have recently lost loved ones and to their families. We extend our condolences to Mike Sandlin and his family on the loss of his father, Thomas who passed away last Friday. Thomas visited us several times for lunch and always wore his cap with the navy logo. He was very proud of his military service and will be greatly missed.
If you’d like to sponsor us during one of our bingo weeks, we play every Wednesday. I am still looking for someone to help call bingo. It’s very simple and lots of fun. If you call bingo from 12:30 to 2 p.m., it frees me up to attend to other obligations at the Center. Come early. We serve lunch at noon, and it’s on us. Feel free to call me at 254-7393541 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday to Friday, if you’re interested. Stay safe.
The National Vietnam War Veterans Day was March 29. Americans united to thank and honor Vietnam veterans and their families for their service and sacrifi ce. The date to honor Vietnam veterans was chosen for March 29, 1973, because it was the day the United States military assistance command in Vietnam was disestablished. It was also the day the last U.S. combat troops departed Vietnam. In addition, on and around this same day Hanoi released the last of its acknowledged prisoners of war.
I salute all the veterans who served active duty in the US Armed Forces from Nov. 1, 1955, to May 15, 1975, regardless of location, and their families. The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that today there are between six and seven million United States Vietnam veterans living in America.
Thank you, and God bless you, Vonda Brooke
