When was the last time that you waited with expectation that something was coming? You were on your guard, weren’t you? You were eagerly waiting for that particular thing or event to happen, weren’t you? Just like a little child waiting for a birthday party or for Christmas to “get here”, it just can’t come soon enough!
Christians are also encouraged to wait, only they are told to wait for the second coming of Jesus Christ, the time when He will come again and receive us into his kingdom. In Christian theology, it’s called “the rapture”, a time when Jesus will come without a moment’s notice to receive all believers, the true church, unto Him and His kingdom and to reign with him for all eternity.
Peter speaks to this issue in the third chapter of his second letter to the church. He tells us that we should be waiting with a spirit of expectation and with a spirit of preparation. When you go on a trip, you prepare for it don’t you? As Christians we are waiting for Christ’s return to take us with Him into heaven. Peter tells us to “make every effort to be found without spot or blemish in His sight”, that is, to be spiritually clean inside, to confess our sins, and to the best of our ability, to be living for Him when He comes. There are many people who are not expecting Jesus to come, in fact, they never accepted that the Son of God ever came to earth in the first place, but He did. He lived a life that demonstrated how we should live, walking by faith with Him every day as though He were right here by our side. Would that make any difference in the way that we live day by day if we knew that Jesus was walking beside us? it certainly should! You see, it’s the folks that don’t believe, the folks that have never accepted Jesus as their Savior that we need to be speaking to and praying for, for their salvation.
