Long Range Rifle accuracy made easy
During the course of a year, readers of this column read about me shooting and hunting with all sorts of sporting arms. Part of the outdoor experience, at least for me, is learning about new methods and new tools for hunting. I thoroughly enjoy hunting with my bows but also muzzleloaders, centerfires, occasionally handguns and even big bore air rifles. Like most rifle hunters, I considered 300 yards a long shot at deer so for many years, I simply sight in my flat shooting calibers about an inch high at 100 yards knowing that I can hold center of shoulder on deer size game out to 300 yards and collect my venison. 07/25/2024 05:23 AM
The IGFA says Manabu Kurita’s 22-pound, 4.97-ounce bass caught in 2009 from Lake Biwa in Japan, and George Perry’s 22-pound, 4-ounce fish caught in 1932 from Montgomery Lake in Georgia, remain tied for the All-Tackle world record northern largemouth bass title. Both fish likely carried som...
IGFA creates separate divisions in world record bass categories, TPWD not yet sold on change
A rule change recently implemented by the Florida-based International Game Fish Association regarding how the organization will now interpret and classify world record largemouth bass is getting the attention of anglers around the globe, especially those intrigued by the big ones. 07/25/2024 05:23 AM

Deer Season not too far away
We’re in the midst of our annual midsummer burn out. A ‘cool’ day this time of year is when the mercury only reaches 95! But fall and cooler weather is not that far away. Whitetail season is less than a scant three months away. The summer hunting shows will soon be underway in several of the major cities across the state. This is a time when we deer hunters make plans for fall hunts and devise strategies to outsmart that wily old buck that eluded us this past season. Is he still out there on our hunting grounds, did he move on or succumb to a pack of coyotes after the rut before he had a chance to regain his strength and vitality? Why not fast forward a few months and think about cooler weather and deer hunting, I think it will do us all good! 07/17/2024 07:14 AM

Bassmaster annual rankings list several Lone Star lakes among best in America
Bassmaster Magazine recently unveiled its annual list of America’s 100 Best Bass Lakes. It’s no surprise that a number of Texas lakes made the cut. 07/17/2024 07:14 AM

Sandbass - The People’s Fish
I was well into my 20s when I first began fishing for white bass (sand bass) as they are called in north Texas. Sand bass flourish in lakes with feeder streams and each spring make spawning runs in the creeks or rivers. 07/04/2024 04:00 AM

Fishing with ‘Chums’ on the water
Lake Tawakoni and I go back a long, long way. I remember my first time to fish the lake back in the mid sixties. We fished from the bank around Rabbit Cove and landed all the crappie the law allowed. When I first began my career as an outdoors writer in the mid eighties, fishing at Tawakoni was a frequent topic of my columns. I’ve fished with and written about many guides through the years, a couple of the ‘originals’ are still guiding there. 06/05/2024 07:21 AM

Old School Catfishing
A fishing trip last week began as many do, with a telephone conservation. I called my long time friend Jason Barber who guides for about anything that swims on his home waters of Cedar Creek Lake to get an update on the fishing for a radio show. 05/29/2024 12:09 PM

For the past quarter- century we have lived on a few acres in an area comprised of 5-10 acre tracts. The perimeter of two sides of the property has a wooded strip about 40 yards wide adjacent neighbor’s property that is also wooded that connects to much larger tracts and ultimately thousands of acres of ranchland. 05/22/2024 11:59 AM
