In reading some of George Friedman’s book, “The Storm Before The Calm,” his view is that an era is coming to a close like every 50 years and we have rejuvenated at the end of prior cycles. In 1932 with the election of Franklin Roosevelt, a cycle of shifting economic resources from capital to labor began. This closed out the previous cycle of The Gilded Age where the rich dominated economic resources that became so egregious it came crashing down with the depression. The last president of this cycle was Jimmy Carter when U. S. industry had finally become non-competitive with the rest of the world. Seven years ago on Feb. 2, 2018, Katy and I went out on a triple date at Rancho in Teague with Michael & Melissa Grissett and Jeremy & Adrian Little. We enjoyed dinner together and then Katy and I stayed in the parking lot for a while talking. The rest is history. There have been mountains and valleys over the past seven years, but I am so thankful that God gave me Katy as my wife. That is a direct contradiction to what I mostly hear, “the world is a miserable place and there’s nothing I can do about It”. Unemployment was 30% at the time; misery was the lot of most working-class people; honest, hard-working family men couldn’t support their families; homeless veterans sold apples on street corners for 5 cents; gasoline sold for 12 cents a gallon, but very few owned a car; there was no social security and no other real safety net for individuals or families.
