Early voting begins next week for gen. election
Early voting for the Nov. 5 general election begins Monday, Oct. 21 and ends on Nov. 1. Texas voters will be choosing from a full slate of candidates, from president to U.S. senator to various county positions.

Do you sound unprofessional?
My handy-dandy “column topic radar” lit up when I encountered an internet article called “12 Phrases You’re Using That Make You Sound Unprofessional.” (This is not to be confused with the equally intriguing online article titled “12 Phrases That Would’ve Been 13 Phrases If That %$#* Black Cat Hadn’t Revved Up My Superstitious Streak.”) The author helpfully pointed out a number of utterances that can make you appear immature, unfocused, unhelpful, inflexible, whiney, too casual or too something to all the delightfully judgmental Stepford Co-workers who impact your career trajectory. Yes, failure to put adequate thought into how you are perceived by colleagues can render you unqualified for that coveted Employee of the Month plaque.

Tariffs
I remember the first time I ever heard the term tariff was in my first economics course in college. A tariff is a tax applied to imported goods and collected by the federal government. It was used to protect infant industries at the founding of the United States as we struggled to build a diverse economy after the Revolution. It later became one of the major reasons contributing to the Civil War as it raised the price on manufactured goods used in the agriculture slave economy of the South but produced in the industrialized North.

Time is flying; turn to the Lord
October is nearly over which means Thanksgiving and Christmas are nearly here. I love that we have cooler weather in the forecast. There are only fivea more weeks of school left before Thanksgiving break.

Both the Fairfield Eagles and Lady Eagles won the district cross country meet last Wednesday, Oct. 9, held in Fairfield to advance to Regionals in Huntsville on Tuesday, Oct.

Eagles defeat Lions 50-43
The Fairfield Eagles hosted the Teague Lions on Friday night, Oct. 11, in their district opener for the Battle of 84. For the first time since 2011, the Eagles came out on top with a 5043 victory. Fairfield moves to 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in district play.

Fall-like weather finally arrives
An end to the unseasonably warm weather seen in Central Texas is expected this week, according to the National Weather Service office in Fort Worth. The weather service noted there would be a “mid-October chill” in the central United States this week as a cold front sinks to the south and into northern Mexi-co.

Court ties up loose ends on grant funds
The Freestone County commissioners held a meeting with ARPA representatives to finish the county’s report on the extreme weather event in May-June of this year. ARPA is the American Rescue Plan Act, which provides funds to counties and cities to assist in financial recovery from the pandemic.

Marie Lawrence
Funeral services for Marie Lawrence, 95, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at First United Methodist Church in Teague. Brother Roy Prather and the Rev. Jeff Craft officiated. Interment followed at Greenwood Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Clay Kimball, Bryce Perkins, Brian Binford, Colin Stacks, Robert Harrelson, Blake Childs and Andy Awalt.
