Fishing with ‘Chums’ on the water
Lake Tawakoni and I go back a long, long way. I remember my first time to fish the lake back in the mid sixties. We fished from the bank around Rabbit Cove and landed all the crappie the law allowed. When I first began my career as an outdoors writer in the mid eighties, fishing at Tawakoni was a frequent topic of my columns. I’ve fished with and written about many guides through the years, a couple of the ‘originals’ are still guiding there. 06/05/2024 07:21 AM

Old School Catfishing
A fishing trip last week began as many do, with a telephone conservation. I called my long time friend Jason Barber who guides for about anything that swims on his home waters of Cedar Creek Lake to get an update on the fishing for a radio show. 05/29/2024 12:09 PM

For the past quarter- century we have lived on a few acres in an area comprised of 5-10 acre tracts. The perimeter of two sides of the property has a wooded strip about 40 yards wide adjacent neighbor’s property that is also wooded that connects to much larger tracts and ultimately thousands of acres of ranchland. 05/22/2024 11:59 AM

As one of my radio hero’s Garrison Keelor used to say, “It’s been a quiet week here in Lake Wobegon.” Change the word “Wobegon” to “Kaufman County” and my exact sentiments will be mirrored. But I have managed to venture afield close to home in pursuit of wild hogs between floods. 05/15/2024 10:51 AM

With all the rain this past week, Luke was forced to stick pretty close to home. He did manage to do a little outdoor cooking out by his little cabin. Courtesy Photo
The Great Indoors
Unless you are reading my column this week online from somewhere in the middle of the Sahara Desert, chances are pretty good that Ole’ Luke doesn’t need to tell you it’s been wet, plenty wet! I’ve tried very hard to get ‘out there’ several times this past week, between rain storms. I watched the weather radar closely and when I saw a break between storms, I loaded my CVA Muzzleloader in the truck and headed to a nearby hotspot for wild hogs. 05/08/2024 02:54 PM

Going on a turkey hunt
Last week, I was in the turkey woods well before daylight. The day promised to be perfect for a spring turkey hunt, calm winds that would allow the sound of my plaintive hen yelps to carry back into the woods where I knew several turkeys had roosted. 05/01/2024 01:10 PM
